A lot of fans have reacted after BBNaija housemate and season 5 finalist, Laycon, revealed his genotype as SC.
According to reports, Laycon revealed this to other housemates during a chat on Monday night.
However, many Nigerians know only about AA, AS, and SS genotypes as taught in the secondary school curriculum.
So, Mynewspage looks at the difference between Sickle Cell SS and SC genotypes.
It’s the same way a person inherits SS Gene that another with the haemoglobin (Hb) SC genotype gets the disease. They both inherited the gene for haemoglobin S and C from each parents.
Some people with this genotype develop the HB SC disease, it is the second most common type of sickle cell disease.
People with Hb SC have similar symptoms to people with Hb SS. However, the anaemia is less serious.
According to experts, although there are inadequate research into the life span of people with SC, they are however expected to live longer if they take care of their health.
They also say it would be a mistake for SC to marry an SS or AS.
What exactly is the sickle cell anemia?
Sickle cell anemia, or sickle cell disease (SCD), is a genetic disease of the red blood cells (RBCs).
Normally, RBCs are shaped like discs, which gives them the flexibility to travel through even the smallest blood vessels. However, with this disease, the RBCs have an abnormal crescent shape that resembles a sickle.
This makes them to be sticky and stiff. It also makes them get trapped in small vessels.
And so, they block blood from reaching different parts of the body. They can also cause pain and tissue damage.
What are the symptoms of sickle cell anaemia?
Symptoms of sickle cell anemia usually show up at an early age. They may begin to show in the child as early as four months old, but generally around the 6-month mark.
Although there are different types of SC disease, they all have similar symptoms with different levels of seriousness.
Some of them are:
a. Serious tiredness and irritation from anemia.
b. Jaundice which causes yellow eye and skin
c. Swelling and pain in the hands and feet
b. Recurring infections
c. Pain in chest, back, arms or legs
Since Laycon made his SC genotype known fans have aired their minds about the matter via Twitter
@Dehkunle: “I read that Laycon is SC. And so, I’m concerned about why Nigerian secondary school curriculum is full of rubbish thigs I’ll never use in my life. It excludes CC, AC, SC from basic teachings of genotype.”
@SwedishRat: “Laycon is SC, that’s why it hurts so much when he’s body shamed and those words used on him that night still hurts me till today.”
@folasadeAyeni1: “Which is worse, SS or SC? Please can anyone in the medical line enlighten us? Continue voting Laycon though…”
@Pearlina30: “I cannot even imagine how much mental damage and pain he went through and is still going through. I’m so sad to hear he is SC. ICONS we have to keep voting aggressively and massively for him to win this grand prize because this is his biggest wish right now. May God Almighty protect Laycon.
@_Valking: “Most of you had to find out Laycon is SC to realize that body shaming him was wrong?”
